Ayana Mathis is an American novelist. Her debut novel The Twelve Tribes of Hattie, published in 2012, was an Oprah's Book Club pick and a New York Times bestseller. The novel follows a family's migration from the Jim Crow South to Philadelphia across the twentieth century.
