One editor, Wren Calloway, builds and maintains every list. There is no content team and no outsourced writing.

How books get picked

A good read-alike matches on more than genre. Picks get weighed on four things:

• ● Theme and subject. What the book is actually about, under the plot.
• ● Tone and emotional arc. A dark book and a cozy book can share a plot and still betray a reader.
• ● Prose style and pacing. Dense and literary reads nothing like fast and plotty.
• ● Reader fit. Who will love it, and who should skip it.

Each recommendation carries a written reason covering what the two books share and at least one way they differ, so you can decide whether the match fits you.

Sources and fact-checking

Plot and publication details come from publishers and the books themselves. Claims about awards, rankings, or an author's history get checked against sources a reader can verify: publisher pages, award bodies, established literary publications, and reader-rating platforms like Goodreads. When a page quotes a critic or an author, the quote gets a source with a title, publisher, publication date, and URL.

Research tools

Research runs on software, including AI tools, for gathering candidate books and cross-checking details like page counts and publication dates. No list publishes without the editor reviewing the picks, the written reasons, and the facts.

Updates and corrections

Lists display the date they were last reviewed. When a pick ages badly or a better match comes out, the list changes. Spot an error? Email hello@similartobooks.com and it gets fixed.
