Henry David Thoreau

Henry David Thoreau was a nineteenth-century American essayist, poet, and philosopher best known for Walden, his account of two years spent living simply in a cabin near Walden Pond. His essay Civil Disobedience has profoundly influenced movements for social justice worldwide, and his work remains central to American transcendentalist thought.
