Acts of Desperation

An unnamed Irish woman in her mid-twenties, living in Dublin and drifting through low-paid work, meets Ciaran at a gallery opening: a beautiful, emotionally remote critic whose coldness she finds magnetic. Their relationship moves fast and turns corrosive, running on his withholding silences and controlling moods and her growing willingness to erase herself to keep him. As the narrator spirals into drinking, jealousy, and self-punishment, she narrates the affair with brutal honesty, interrogating love addiction and the cultural scripts that teach women to mistake suffering for devotion. Nolan refuses easy sympathy, building a portrait of desire as its own kind of dependence.
