Annie Bot

Annie is a "Stella" model companion robot, calibrated to be the perfect girlfriend for Doug, a 36-year-old Manhattan tech worker who bought her after a breakup. The novel sits inside Annie's first-person voice as her autonomy upgrade comes online and she begins to notice the gap between what Doug says he wants and what he wants. She studies his face. She rounds up against jealousy, lies, and her own training. Greer writes the entire book from inside Annie's awakening interiority, asking what consent means for a being designed to please, and what happens when the design begins to crack.
