Sciona Freynan is the first woman ever admitted to the High Magistry at the University of Magics and Industry in the walled city of Tiran, and her work inscribing magical-glyph systems has put her at the front rank of the institution. The city runs on extracted magical energy, sourced from somewhere the magistry has never explained, and when Sciona's new janitor Thomil turns out to be a Kwen, a member of the colonized people outside the wall, she starts pulling threads she was never meant to touch.
