Cold Enough for Snow
An unnamed narrator arranges to meet her mother in Tokyo for a trip through Japan, and the two travel together through galleries, gardens, restaurants, and steady autumn rain. The daughter has planned the itinerary carefully, yet a quiet distance runs through everything: between the two women, between the narrator and her own memories, and between language and what it can hold. As they move from city to countryside, the narrator drifts through recollections of her family, her past, and small uncertainties about whether she and her mother truly understand each other at all. Jessica Au's slim novel unfolds in clear, unhurried prose, building a portrait of closeness and estrangement that exist in the same breath.
