Germinal

Étienne Lantier, a young out-of-work mechanic, drifts into the coal country of northern France and takes a job at the Le Voreux pit, where he boards with the Maheu family and learns how completely the mining company owns its workers. The miners labor in heat and darkness for wages that keep their children hungry, and Étienne, reading socialist pamphlets by candlelight, begins to argue that things could be otherwise. When the company cuts pay, he helps lead a strike that spreads across the coalfield. Hunger sets in, tempers break, the army is called, and the strike collapses into bloodshed and ruin. Zola refuses easy heroes. The owners are not villains and the workers are not saints, but the system grinds everyone, and the suffering only sows something that will rise later.
