Heidi
Orphaned Heidi is handed off to her grandfather, a hermit who lives alone on a mountainside above the village of Dorfli in the Swiss Alps. She takes to the peaks at once, roaming with the goatherd Peter and the flowers and the goats, and even the gruff old man softens under her open heart. When Heidi is sent away to the city of Frankfurt to be a companion for Klara, a wealthy girl who cannot walk, she wastes away with longing for the mountains. Returned at last to the Alps, Heidi invites Klara to visit, and the same clean air and freedom that saved Heidi begin to work on her friend.
