Homeseeking
Recently widowed Haiwen is buying bananas at a Los Angeles supermarket when he looks up and sees Suchi, the girl he loved sixty years earlier, for the first time since 1947. As children in a Shanghai neighborhood, they were drawn together by the sound of his violin, and their friendship grew into soul-deep love, until Haiwen secretly enlisted in the Nationalist army to save his brother from the draft, leaving Suchi only his violin and a note. Homeseeking follows the separated pair across seven decades of upheaval, tracing Haiwen's story backward from the present and Suchi's forward from childhood, through war, famine, the song halls of Hong Kong, the military camps of Taiwan, New York, and California, until their two timelines meet.
