If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things
On the last day of summer on an ordinary working-class street in an unnamed English city, the residents go about their small routines. A man photographs the changing sky. Twin boys watch the world from a doorstep. An old couple move slowly through a shared morning. A young woman, narrating from the future in alternating chapters, looks back on this single day and the quiet catastrophe that ended it. McGregor moves from window to window in long, lyrical sentences, gathering the textures of a community that barely knows itself, and circling an event he refuses to state plainly, leaving the reader to assemble what happened from the shape of its absence.
