Kristin Lavransdatter

In 14th-century Norway, Kristin grows up the cherished daughter of Lavrans, a devout landowner in the Gudbrandsdal valley. Betrothed young to a steady man, she instead falls for the charming, reckless Erlend Nikulausson and breaks her engagement to marry him against her father's wishes. The trilogy follows the marriage across decades, through the births of many sons, Erlend's political disgrace, the slow erosion of their early passion, and Kristin's deepening, conflicted faith. Undset renders the medieval world in fine detail, the farm seasons, the church rituals, the codes of honor and shame, while keeping her gaze on Kristin's inner life, her pride, her guilt, and her long effort to make peace with the choices that shaped her. The story ends in the plague years, with a hard-won grace.
