Hanna and Joe Schutt hoped college would help their awkward daughter Dawn find herself, but the boyfriend she brings home, Rud, leaves them deeply uneasy. Soon after, the couple is attacked in their own home. Joe is killed, Hanna is gravely injured, and the trauma erases her memory of the night. Rud is convicted, while the community whispers that Dawn may have been involved too. When Rud wins an appeal and Dawn returns to the family home, Hanna sets out to recover the lost memory so she can testify at the retrial and keep her husband's killer behind bars. But the fragments that resurface raise a question she dreads facing: whether she ever truly knew her own daughter.
