Lady of Hay

Jo Clifford, a London journalist, sets out to write a piece debunking hypnotic regression, only to slip under too easily and wake reliving the life of Matilda de Braose, a noblewoman of twelfth-century Wales. Matilda endures an abusive marriage to William de Braose, loves a knight named Richard de Clare, and dies horribly at the order of King John. As Jo keeps regressing, sometimes without meaning to, Matilda's terror and passion begin flooding into her modern life, and the three men closest to Jo seem to carry the shadows of John, William, and Richard. Erskine braids the medieval and the modern into one story about a past that will not release its grip.
