Kacey leaves her volatile mother behind and moves to the small Wisconsin town of Broken Falls to live with a father she barely knows, plus a stepmother, stepbrother, and half sister. The fresh start feels almost too easy when she is welcomed into a close circle of friends built around Bailey and Jade. Then the warmth cools without explanation, Kacey finds herself uninvited from the biggest party of the year, and Bailey vanishes on the night of it and never comes home. As the search for Bailey intensifies, the evidence and the town's suspicion begin to point squarely at the new girl, and Kacey has to piece together what happened while the reader learns how much of her version of events to believe.
