Monsignor Quixote

Father Quixote, an obscure parish priest in the Spanish village of El Toboso who believes himself descended from Cervantes's knight, is unexpectedly raised to monsignor after helping a stranded Italian bishop. Uneasy with the honor, he sets out across Spain in his ancient car, Rocinante, with his friend Enrique Zancas, the recently voted-out Communist mayor he nicknames Sancho. As they travel, the two trade arguments about Catholic faith and Marxist politics, drink a great deal of wine, run into the Guardia Civil and a pornographic cinema, and grow closer despite their opposed beliefs. The journey builds toward a final confrontation with church authority that tests how far either man will bend.
