Once Upon a River

Sixteen-year-old Margo Crane lives in a tight community of rural folk along the Stark River in southwest Michigan, where her gift with a rifle is the one thing that sets her apart. After the violent death of her father, an event she is complicit in, Margo takes to the river in a boat with a few supplies and a worn biography of Annie Oakley, searching for the mother who abandoned the family. The river was her childhood paradise, but for a young woman traveling alone it is full of danger. Campbell tracks Margo through meth dealers, an angry cousin, a dying friend's grave request, and the question of what she is willing to pay for the life she wants.
