Juan is a medium owned by the Order, a cult of wealthy Argentine families who use his body to contact a god called the Darkness. In 1981, Juan takes his young son Gaspar on the road, fleeing the Order and trying to keep the boy out of the inheritance that destroyed him. The book moves across six sections and four decades, from Juan's childhood in the 1960s through Gaspar's young adulthood in the 1990s, weaving the cult's rituals into the years of the Argentine dictatorship and the disappeared.
