Prayers for the Stolen

Ladydi Garcia Martinez is a girl growing up on a poor mountainside in the state of Guerrero, Mexico, where the drug trade shapes every life. The mothers of the region hide their daughters in holes dug into the ground when the cartel SUVs come through, because girls who are seen are stolen. Ladydi's mother disguises her as a boy and does everything she can to keep her invisible. As Ladydi moves from schoolgirl to a housekeeping job in Acapulco and finally to a prison cell, Clement traces how the narco war reaches into and rearranges the lives of women and children the rest of the country tries not to see.
