Semiosis

Fifty colonists flee a poisoned Earth to build a nonviolent society on a distant world they name Pax. Survival proves harder than expected. The native plants are chemically hostile, the animals are strange, and it takes generations for the humans to grasp that the planet's true intelligence is botanical. A bamboo-like organism they name Stevland has been observing them, shaping the ecosystem, and slowly deciding whether these newcomers are worth protecting or pruning. Told across seven generations by seven different narrators, Semiosis follows the fragile, shifting alliance between a human colony and a sentient plant, where communication itself is the survival problem to be solved.
