Julian Jessop, a once-famous artist now widowed and invisible at 79, writes the truth about his loneliness in a small green notebook and leaves it behind in Monica's Cafe in Fulham. Monica, the cafe owner, finds it and adds her own confession, then leaves it for the next person. The notebook passes through a recovering addict, a frazzled new mother, an Australian wanderer, and others, and each truth they trade pulls the strangers into one another's lives until they have built the family none of them admitted they needed.
