The Bird King

In 1491, as the Reconquista closes in on the last Muslim sultanate in Iberia, Fatima is the only remaining Circassian concubine in the palace of Granada. Her dearest friend is Hassan, the royal mapmaker, who can draw maps of places he has never seen and bend the shape of reality to open doors that should not exist. When an emissary of the Spanish Inquisition arrives and marks Hassan's gift as sorcery, the two flee the crumbling court together. Guided by an old poem about a mythical island ruled by the Bird King, they cross a hostile land in search of a refuge that may be nothing more than a story.
