The Cliffs

As a teenager, Jane was drawn to an abandoned purple Victorian house perched on the cliffs of a Maine coastal town. Years later, her marriage and career in crisis, she comes home to find the house bought and gutted by a wealthy new owner who believes it is haunted. Hired to make sense of what the house holds, Jane the archivist digs into the generations of women who lived there, uncovering stories the town buried, including those of Indigenous and Shaker women whose histories were written out of the official record. The novel braids past and present to ask who a place belongs to and what is owed to the people erased from it.
