The Colony

Mr. Lloyd, an English painter, arrives on a small island off the west coast of Ireland in the summer of 1979, intending to render its cliffs and changing light. Soon after, Jean-Pierre Masson, a French linguist, returns for another season of recording the island's fading Irish, frustrated to find an Englishman intruding on his study. The two outsiders circle each other and the islanders, especially the widow Mairéad and her teenage son James, who is torn between the painter's promise of a wider life and the only home he knows. Magee braids the men's competing projects with the island's own rhythms, and threads news of the Troubles on the mainland through the summer, building a quiet meditation on language, colonialism, art, and who gets to decide what a place means.
