The Door

A Budapest novelist hires an older woman named Emerence to keep her house, and the 20 years that follow turn the relationship into a study of two women circling each other across class, generation, and an unbridgeable private wall. Emerence locks her own house against everyone, refuses food, hides her past behind a series of half-disclosures, and has built a moral system the narrator cannot crack. Szabó wrote the book as an autobiographical reckoning with a real housekeeper she had failed, and the closing chapters move toward a single act of betrayal that destroys both women.
