The English Patient

In the last months of World War II, a badly burned man lies dying in a bombed Italian villa, his identity lost along with his skin. A Canadian nurse named Hana stays behind to care for him as the front moves north. They are joined by Caravaggio, a thief turned spy with a grudge, and Kip, a Sikh sapper who defuses unexploded bombs in the surrounding hills. As the patient drifts through morphine and memory, his account of a doomed love affair in the North African desert before the war begins to surface, and the question of who he really was, and what he did, takes shape around him.
