The Forgotten Garden

On the eve of the First World War, a small girl is found alone on a ship bound for Australia, holding only a suitcase and a book of fairy tales. The woman who promised to look after her, known only as the Authoress, never appears. The girl is raised under a new name, and the truth of her origins stays buried until, decades later, her granddaughter Cassandra inherits a cottage in Cornwall and begins to unravel the family that abandoned a child to protect itself. Morton moves among three time periods, drawing the lines between a grand English estate, a hidden garden, and the woman who set the abandonment in motion.
