The Keeper of Lost Things

Anthony Peardew has spent 40 years collecting the small things people lose, a hair bobble, a biscuit tin holding cremated ashes, a single button, labeling each one with where and when he found it, all in penance for a loss of his own. When he dies he leaves his rambling house and his entire collection to Laura, his housekeeper, a woman flattened by a failed marriage who has stopped expecting anything from life. Tasked with returning the objects to their owners, Laura draws in a young gardener and a neighbor with Down syndrome, and the three of them, plus a restless ghost, become the family the house was waiting for.
