The Saint of Bright Doors
Fetter was raised by his mother to assassinate his father, a charismatic prophet who founded a powerful religious movement. From birth she severed his shadow from his feet, leaving him able to drift unseen and even to fly, and she trained him in the arts of killing. As a young man, Fetter slips away from that destiny into the teeming, surreal city of Luriat, where he attends a support group for others who were prophesied to be chosen and never were. He becomes fixated on the city's bright doors, sealed and ornamented portals that lead nowhere anyone can explain. As old and new violence converges on Luriat, Fetter is pulled back toward his father, his severed past, and the buried history of the city itself.
