The Tunnel

Juan Pablo Castel, a successful but isolated painter in Buenos Aires, announces in his first sentence that he has murdered Maria Iribarne and that he is writing this account so that someone, anyone, might understand him. He recounts how he first noticed Maria studying a small, overlooked detail in one of his paintings, became convinced she was the only person who truly saw him, and pursued her into an affair poisoned by his own jealousy and need for total possession. As Castel's suspicions grow, his reasoning curls in on itself, building a closed logic that leads to a killing he narrates with chilling detachment. The novel is a short, claustrophobic descent into the mind of a man who can no longer tell obsession from love.
