In 1940, eighteen-year-old orphan Juliet Armstrong is plucked from a dull clerical job and recruited by MI5 to type up the secretly recorded conversations of British fascist sympathizers, who believe the undercover agent in the next flat is a Gestapo contact. The work is tedious until Juliet is pulled into the field herself. Ten years later, settled into a producer's job at the BBC, she crosses paths with a man from those wartime days who claims not to know her, and an anonymous note warns that she will pay for what she did. Atkinson moves between 1940, 1950, and a brief 1981 frame as Juliet's past closes in.
