Viriconium
Viriconium collects the four works M. John Harrison set in his fictional far-future city: The Pastel City, A Storm of Wings, In Viriconium, and the stories of Viriconium Nights. The city sits on the wreckage of countless fallen civilizations, surrounded by deserts of rusting machinery nobody understands. The Pastel City opens as straightforward sword-and-science adventure, with an aging knight recalled to defend a fragile queen. From there Harrison turns inward and strange, each successive work eroding the certainties of the last until the city's name, map, and history all come loose. The sequence reads less as a story and more as a meditation on decay, memory, and the impossibility of ever telling a clean tale about a ruined world.
