Winging It
Winging It is the second novel in Ashlyn Kane and Morgan James's Hockey Ever After series, a queer hockey-romance line set in a fictional NHL universe centered on the Indianapolis Racers. Dante Baltierra is the team's brash, charming first-line center, recently and very publicly outed by an ex-boyfriend's tabloid interview. Gabe Martin is the team's quiet, steady backup goaltender, openly gay for years and married to a former teammate whose career-ending concussion has left their relationship in slow, painful decline. When Dante turns up at Gabe's apartment after a brutal road game and the implosion of his own short-lived relationship, the two slip first into friendship, then into a fake-dating arrangement designed to manage Dante's media exposure, and then into something neither of them quite signed up for. Kane and James write the locker-room politics, the cap-space arithmetic, and the actual texture of an NHL season with notable confidence.
