Absolution
Absolution opens 20 years before Area X with a biologist team on the Forgotten Coast studying alligators that have started doing things alligators do not do. The middle section follows Old Jim, a drunk Central operative chasing a photograph of a Brigade no one in the Agency remembers sending. The final section drops a doomed 2010s expedition across the Area X border 18 months before Annihilation begins. VanderMeer ties the three sections together with the same slow uncanny biology that built the original trilogy, returning to the Forgotten Coast 10 years after the trilogy ended and 20 years before its events began.
