An Atlas of Impossible Longing

An Atlas of Impossible Longing follows three generations of a family in the Bengal town of Songarh. Amulya moves his family from Calcutta and builds a house at the forest's edge, where his descendants raise Mukunda, a foundling of uncertain caste, alongside their own daughter Bakul. As children Mukunda and Bakul are inseparable, but as they grow the household sends Mukunda away to keep them apart, and he makes his way alone through a partition-shadowed Calcutta. The forbidden longing between them outlasts the years and the distance, drawing the book toward a reckoning with the house, the family, and the love that caste and propriety tried to forbid.
