Death in Her Hands

Vesta Gul is a seventy-two-year-old widow who has moved to a cabin in the woods with her dog Charlie after the death of her domineering husband. On a morning walk she finds a handwritten note pinned to the ground: "Her name was Magda. Nobody will ever know who killed her. It wasn't me. Here is her dead body." There is no body. Vesta cannot let the note go. She invents Magda, gives her a history and a killer, and slides into an imagined investigation that gradually reveals more about her own buried marriage and mind than any real crime. Moshfegh turns the mystery form inside out, using it to map a lonely woman's slow dissolution.
