Dragonwyck

In 1844, Miranda Wells is a restless farmer's daughter in Greenwich, Connecticut when a letter arrives from a distant, wealthy relative. Nicholas Van Ryn, patroon of a great manor called Dragonwyck on the Hudson River, invites one of the Wells girls to serve as companion to his young daughter. Miranda goes, and is at once dazzled by Nicholas, by the manor's grandeur, and by a world of servants and old-world privilege she has only imagined. When his frail wife dies, Nicholas marries Miranda, and the marriage curdles into control, cruelty, and secrets she is not meant to uncover. Against a backdrop of the Anti-Rent Wars and a fading feudal order, Miranda has to see her charming husband clearly before it destroys her.
