Chiamaka is a Nigerian travel writer riding out the pandemic in her Maryland house, counting through her past loves and asking what she actually wants from any of them. The novel rotates through her best friend Zikora, a Washington DC lawyer staring down a betrayal; her cousin Omelogor, a Lagos finance executive who built her career inside a system she now wants to dismantle; and her housekeeper Kadiatou, a Guinean immigrant whose own story echoes the real-life Nafissatou Diallo case. Adichie writes the four-woman structure she perfected in Half of a Yellow Sun and applies it to pandemic-era love, ambition, and the violence of immigration policy.
