Escaping Mr. Rochester

Jane Eyre takes the governess post at Thornfield Hall with no wish for a husband and no illusions about romance. High in the house, Bertha Mason has been imprisoned for years by her husband, Edward Rochester, who locked her away after their marriage soured and he sought revenge for the inheritance she withheld. In this retelling, Jane and Bertha's paths converge, and the two women come to see that the real menace is the master of the house himself. As Rochester's temper frays under Jane's questions and Bertha's refusal to break, the pair understand that survival means trusting each other. Told in alternating voices, the novel reimagines Bronte's gothic as a story of two women who choose to save each other rather than compete for a dangerous man.
