Expecting Someone Taller
Malcolm Fisher is a shy, ordinary young man whose life changes when he runs over a badger on a country road. The badger is really Ingolf, the last of the giants who guarded the Ring of the Nibelung, and with his dying breath he passes the ring and the shape-shifting Tarnhelm to Malcolm, along with mastery of the world. The trouble is that Malcolm has no ambition and no idea what to do with omnipotence. Meanwhile the gods of Valhalla, who want the ring back, dispatch a Valkyrie named Ortlinde to seduce it out of him, and a cast of squabbling deities schemes around the reluctant new ruler. Holt turns Wagner's grand opera into a modern English comedy about a nobody who would rather not save or rule anything.
