Hunger

In the Norwegian capital of Kristiania, an unnamed young writer tries to sell articles to newspapers while slowly starving. Too proud to beg and too erratic to hold work, he pawns his clothes, invents lies to strangers, and swings between manic confidence and total despair as hunger reshapes his sense of reality. Hamsun offers almost no plot, only the day-to-day churn of a mind coming apart under deprivation, rendered in prose that tracks every flicker of self-deception and shame. The book stays inside its narrator's head from first page to last.
