In a future where women are no longer born but engineered in labs, girls called "eves" are raised inside the School, where they are ranked daily on appearance and obedience. At sixteen they graduate into one of three roles: companion to a man, concubine for the elite, or chastity teaching the next generation. Only the ten highest-ranked of each year become wives. frieda has always counted on her friend isabel to be the most beautiful, but as isabel begins to fall apart and slip down the rankings, frieda is forced to choose between loyalty and survival inside a system designed to turn the girls against each other.
