Splendors and Glooms

In foggy Victorian London, Lizzie Rose and Parsefall are orphaned apprentices to Gaspare Grisini, a master of the marionette theater who may be something far more sinister. When wealthy, lonely Clara Wintermute invites them to perform at her birthday, she vanishes the next morning, and suspicion falls on Grisini. Far to the north, the ancient witch Cassandra lies dying, desperate to rid herself of a magical fire opal that has cursed every keeper before her. As the children's paths draw toward Cassandra's crumbling manor, Lizzie Rose and Parsefall must reckon with dark magic, a missing friend, and the temptation of a power that could save or destroy them.
