In an alternate United States of 2030, an algorithm dictates the occupation, spouse, and residence of every descendant of slavery, and Black women have no say in any of it. Solenne Bonet, living in Texas, is selected to become the concubine of Bastien Martin, a powerful white government official, and must navigate the danger of a relationship built on absolute power imbalance. To survive, Solenne secretly writes the biography of Henriette, an ancestor who was an enslaved concubine to a wealthy Louisiana planter in the 1800s, tracing a direct line between the forced breeding of enslaved women and the algorithmic bondage of her own life.
