The Wall

A middle-aged woman travels to a hunting lodge in the Austrian Alps with relatives, and when they fail to return from a trip to the village, she walks out to find an invisible, impenetrable wall has sealed off her stretch of valley. Beyond the wall, every person and animal has been struck motionless, frozen mid-gesture as if dead on their feet. Alone except for a dog named Lynx, a pregnant cow, and a cat, she keeps a written record of her survival across the seasons, planting potatoes, mowing hay, hunting deer, and reckoning with what it means to be the last human being she will ever see. Haushofer turns the premise into a stark, meditative account of solitude, labor, and the bonds that remain when everything else is gone.
