We Do Not Part

Kyungha, a writer haunted by her own previous book about a Korean massacre, gets a call from her friend Inseon asking her to travel to Jeju Island in a blizzard and feed her pet bird before it starves. The trip turns into a winter reckoning with the 1948 Jeju massacre that killed Inseon's family, and the second half of the book moves into the historical recovery work Inseon and her mother have spent their lives doing. Kang writes the blizzard, the bird, and the buried bones in the same restrained register that won her the Nobel, asking how friendship survives when history is the third party in the room.
