Woman of Light

Luz "Little Light" Lopez is a tea-leaf reader and laundress in 1930s Denver when her older brother Diego, a snake charmer and factory worker, is run out of town by a violent white mob, leaving Luz to fend for herself. As she navigates work, love, and the racism of the city, Luz begins to have visions that transport her to her Indigenous homeland in the nearby Lost Territory. Through those visions she witnesses five generations of her family's history, how her people flourished and how they were threatened, and she comes to understand that it falls to her to keep the family stories from vanishing. Fajardo-Anstine builds a cinematic epic of the Indigenous Chicano West out of memory, magic, and survival.
