The Deal
The setup leans on tutoring and fake dating rather than a shared rink.
Elle Kennedy's Off-Campus series basically invented the modern college hockey romance, and The Deal is where it all starts. Garrett Graham needs a tutor. Hannah Wells needs a fake boyfriend to make her crush jealous.
What follows is one of the most satisfying slow burns in the genre. I love how Kennedy handles the humor here. Garrett is genuinely funny without being a jerk about it, and Hannah holds her own in every conversation.
The hockey setting feels authentic, the friend group dynamics are excellent, and the emotional beats land exactly when they should. If Icebreaker was your entry point into sports romance, The Deal is the book that helped define the entire subgenre. The fake-dating setup gives the story built-in tension, and watching these two go from reluctant partners to something real is exactly the kind of arc that made you love Nate and Stassie.
