Station Eleven
Art and Shakespeare replace corporate routine as what survives.
Emily St. John Mandel's novel moves between the days surrounding a flu pandemic that collapses civilization and the world twenty years later, where a traveling Shakespeare company performs for scattered settlements. Both Station Eleven and Severance use a pandemic as the mechanism for ending the world, and both are far more interested in what people carry with them than in the mechanics of survival.
Mandel structures her book around objects and memories that persist, while Ma focuses on the routines that persist even when they serve no purpose. The two novels are almost mirror images: Station Eleven argues that art and human connection survive catastrophe, while Severance suggests that mindless habit is what survives. Mandel's prose is warmer and more lyrical than Ma's flat corporate style, which means Station Eleven reads as the more hopeful of the two.
But both books refuse the grim survivalist genre in favor of something more meditative about what we choose to keep when everything else is gone.
