The Alchemist
Santiago is a young Andalusian shepherd who can read, which makes him something of a puzzle to his family, and who has twice dreamed of a treasure buried at the foot of the Pyramids in Egypt. After an encounter with a wandering old man who calls himself the King of Salem and speaks to him about a personal legend, Santiago sells his sheep, crosses to Tangier, is immediately robbed, and begins the long journey across the desert that the book insists is the point. Along the way he works for a crystal merchant, travels with a Romani-coded caravan, falls in love with a woman of the oasis named Fatima, and apprentices to an alchemist who speaks to him about the language of the world. Paulo Coelho's slim 1988 fable, translated into eighty-plus languages, remains one of the best-selling novels ever written.
